China-US Intergovernmental Cooperation of the Key National Research and Development Program launched in YSFRI

Recently, the China-US Intergovernmental Cooperation of the Key National Research and Development Program “Cooperation research on scientific basis of adaptive fisheries management in coastal waters: a case study of Bohai Sea” has been launched in YSFRI, the China chief scientist of this project is Dr. Xiujuan Shan from YSFRI, and the US chief scientist is Dr. Yong Chen from Maine University, Dr. Chen is the tenure of Maine University, and well-known in US fishery management and fish stock assessment. The scientists from Ocean University of China, Shandong University, and Yantai University will also contribute to this project. The main participant from US includes Dr. Ray Hilborn from University of Washington. Dr. Ray Hilborn is the academician of the American Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada, and has published a number of papers with high influence in top journals of fisheries, including some papers published in Science and Nature.

Taken Bohai Sea as an example, this project will focus on the key basic problems of fisheries management, in order to realize the standardization of the data from different sources, the optimization of the limited fishery data and the reconstruction of the missing fishery data, as well as the optimization of sampling design for offshore investigation through the cooperation between the Chinese and US scientists. This project will further improve the academic level of fisheries research in general, cultivate young scientists, and strengthen the international academic exchanges. The results of this project will provide a typical case for the adaptive fisheries management in China coastal fisheries, and promote the adaptive fisheries management in China.
